Long Beach, MS

It’s not often I wake up to a story about Long Beach, MS on the front page of the New York Times. (link).

Of course, it would be a story like this:

Stores are not reopening in part because they cannot get insurance, he said; just three gap-toothed blocks remain of the commercial strip that was once at least twice as long, running from the railroad tracks down to the beach.

I like the map though, that could come in handy.

Thank God they didn’t violate the federal law requiring the use of the word ‘gap-toothed’ in any story using the word ‘Mississippi.’ Thank God for that.

Yep. At first I thought it was going to say “just three gap-toothed blockheads remain.”

    Right. I would’ve resented that.

I mean, since only 3 of us were left, you’d think they could’ve interviewed me so’s I could say ‘hi’ to my maw-maw.

Isn’t it fun to kick the cute little rednecks when they’re down? It makes me feel so superior!

  • Postscript:

arcturus actually contacted Leslie Eaton to find out if “gap-toothed blocks” was some sort of comment on the slack-jawed locals. We have been assured no such coded insult was intended.

Now that I think about it, my home town *does* have a certain Alfred E. Neuman quality about it.
