might i suggest, on the same vague lines- F*ck , the Documentary (it's name.). It's modern, not from the '70s, but it's fairly shallow purpose is to discuss the use of the 7 Words that the FCC has deemed damaging to our ears, how and when that came about (fairly late, I was a bit shocked), with commentary by politicos left right center and non-politic. fairly interesting, but not very in-depth.

The thing that i find amusing is watching Remakes of movies/etc. from the '70s and how wrong they get the whole thing- forgetting the timelines of slang, dress, etc. But for a refreshing trip back in time, check out Tom Heinl's website (tomheinl.com, i believe) - he has his 5th grade notebook.. you can flip through his drawings of the Bionic Man, etc.

I saw 101 Dalmations for the first time in forever last year. A G-rated Disney cartoon. The pleasant wife calls her pleasant husband an 'idiot' more than once, and not in a loving way. Jarring.

I highly recommend The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 (1974) as a film that has the kind of coded, time-specific cultural appeal that you are talking about--if you haven't already seen it in this or a recent decade. (French title: Les Pirates du Metro). There is, of course, the way everybody looks, the way people talk, and the look and feel of new york city of the 70's, etc. Most strikingly, though, there is this casual assumption of an anti-authoritarian posture all the time by the characters and by the tone of the movie that is almost shocking by current zeitgeist standards. By the way, Walter Matthau is great in this.
