Green Dilemma

So let’s say I have about 10 good years left on my Honda Accord, which gets like 32 hwy/23 city. I’d like to trade it in for a Prius. So I drive my gas-guzzling Accord to the Toyota dealership and trade it in for a nice green Prius. The dealer then sells the Accord to Joe the Plumber who continues to drive it for the remaining ten years of its life.

Why is it better for the planet and all that for him to drive it for the next ten years than for me to be driving it?

  • Even Joe the Plumber realizes it’s cheaper to drive the Accord gas-wise than his humongous American-made 4WD truck, which his wife has been trying to talk him into getting rid of anyway. This is him finally, reluctantly, going along with that. Besides being gas-hungry, the truck actually has a cracked manifold, and so was doomed. He didn’t want to admit that to his wife since she didn’t like it and it has been a constant point of tension over several years. He never really needed the truck for work. All his tools fit fine in the back seat of the Honda. Instead of getting rid of the truck, he will put it up on blocks in the front yard as his final passive/aggressive trump card in the argument with his wife. Who probably voted for Obama, though she won’t admit it. He’ll tinker with it occasionally, but more often just go sit in it and drink a beer. After some years of this it will go to the salvage yard.
