Pecans October 27, 2006

This is pecan season. Damn I miss pecans! Those green stains in the driveway, the scabby husk. The oof! you feel when you fall in the lawn on top of a pecan. The skill acquired from opening millions of pecans — to be able to remove one whole, clean it and eat it. Filling up grocery sack after grocery sack of them, whole car trunk loads, and taking them to Trader Smith’s and getting like a buck thirty-five for a whole weekend’s worth of work. I wish I had a pecan tree in my back yard.

Man, I’d forgotten that feeling.

..the smell of burning piles of pecan leaves and the color of persimmons fallen off the neighbors tree, rolling down the circle, uneaten, unappreciated by any but the 2-day-flocks of starlings. The sunburn on the tops of your arms and legs and the sore palm from sitting for hours on the back patio with the Rocket nutcracker, cracking open striped mysteries cloaked in bitter velvet. endlessly skimming the pool of their fallen leaves, and diving down to wonder at the bleached skeletons of those missed. aaaah. damn.
